History

PMT in El Paso, Texas

Charles E. Sholtis, founder of Plastic Molding Technology, left his home in the bituminous coal mining area of western Pennsylvania to start his career in engineering. He attended Pennsylvania State University for one year where he studied drafting and design technology, then moved to Jamestown, New York in 1960. Initially employed at Marwin Rockwell Corporation, he took a job in the ball bearing factory working shifts as a tool crib attendant. He remained in this position for over a year until promoted to a draftsman in the engineering department.

In 1963, he set his sights on gaining more knowledge and experience in his field of work, tool engineering. He took a position with Sylvania Electric in Warren, PA as a design draftsman working in the molding plant. Mr. Sholtis held various positions there including estimator and junior mold designer until he left in 1967.

Finding limited possibilities for advancement in Jamestown, Mr. Sholtis realized the need to look beyond Jamestown for employment. He interviewed at several large companies with plants in the plastics industry. In 1969, he accepted an offer from Remington Shaver which prompted the move to Connecticut. He took a position in Bridgeport, CT as a Plastics Process Engineer where he remained until 1971.

Later, Sholtis accepted a position with Timex Corporation as a Plastics Manufacturing Engineer working in the large molding production area. Still, the desire to run his own business prompted him to open a start-up facility. In 1973, Sholtis rented space in an old 1800’s mill building on Knowlton Street in Bridgeport, CT. The first molding press was a very basic Arburg C4B model, an air press with a small 5-ton clamp. At night and on weekends in his own shop, he ran three machines and worked two jobs while he established his enterprise.

He stated:

When I first started my business, it was a part-time job… working forty hours at Timex and running my own machines at night and on weekends. Yes, there were long hours, a 70-hour week was the norm.”

In late 1974, when he had enough business to try to make it on his own, he left Timex. His dedication is apparent:

“Even after going full time, there were many days that we would go home, come back and stay until the next morning trying to get a new job going, or to satisfy a customer.
